Bridgeport Hospital Long Range Capacity Planning

Bridgeport Hospital is a private, not-for-profit acute care hospital located in Connecticut’s most populous city, primarily serving patients from Fairfield and New Haven Counties. Bridgeport Hospital has 383 licensed beds plus 42 beds licensed under Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, more than 750 active attending physicians representing more than 60 sub-specialties, 230 medical/surgical residents and fellows in programs affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine.

The hospital was at capacity and had completed tactics to free up beds, such as moving its rehab patients to an underutilized hospital in the Yale system and developing an off campus ambulatory surgery center.  However, the hospital anticipated more growth due to a recent affiliation with a major medical group and ambitious physician recruitment plans.

The Innova Group developed dynamic tools that combined detailed internal workload data with market data to enable the hospital to quickly develop different strategic, care management, and operational scenarios to estimate future need for inpatient beds by service line, operating rooms, and emergency department bays.  The tools not only provide a mechanism for flexible need forecasting, but also a platform for generating discussion about strategic and operational targets for the hospital.

“Thank you all for this work to date – the model you have built is amazing and the strategic discussion we are able to have due to this is excellent!”
